The Duchess Sanctuary is home to almost 200 rescued horses. The sanctuary is located on over 1,000 acres of rangeland amid the foothills near Oakland, Oregon. It was a privilege to get to visit and photograph the equines for reference material for my artwork. Even though my visit was a few years ago I’ve always planned to create some paintings based on the visit. In preparing for my upcoming art exhibit, “Faces and Places”, these four paintings took root. Three are for the Places portion of the exhibit, and one is for Faces.

Horse and Garden – featuring Duchess Sanctuary paintings
Karen’s ongoing project, Horse and Garden, features her paintings with flowers! Her artistic career started with floral watercolors – before she switched to oil paintings of horses (over 20 years ago). For the past 10 years, Karen has been hybridizing daylilies – which are the floweres in these photos! You can see lots more #horseandgarden photos and more #horsepaintingsbykarenbrenner on Instagram @horsepaintingsbykarenbrenner. I hope you enjoy these!
